The new artistic director of the Dartington International Summer School in 2014 is to be oboist and conductor Nicholas Daniel, the Dartington Hall Trust has announced.

Mr Daniel, whose appointment is initially for one year, takes over from John Woolrich, who leaves the post at the end of a three-year contract.

The news was announced to students and performers at the 2013 summer school by David Francis, director of arts at the trust, during a choral concert on 16 August.

In a press release, Mr Francis said, ‘The role of artistic director is absolutely key to making DISS the success it is and I know that Nicholas will bring real energy to it as well as a commitment to providing the very best opportunities for our participants, students and artists.’

Mr Daniel said, ‘I am honoured and delighted to continue the work of Gavin Henderson and John Woolrich at Dartington International Summer School. There are wonderful opportunities here to focus and recharge the work which goes on, and Dartington is a magnificent place to be creative. The inclusive nature of the summer school will continue to be at its heart and I am looking forward to finding ever more stimulating and appropriate courses and activities for people who attend, as well as for those who join us for single events and concerts.’

An internationally renowned soloist, chamber musician and principal oboe with Britten Sinfonia, Mr Daniel gave the world premiere performance of the oboe concerto by John Woolrich at the Proms in 1996. He has visited the summer school as tutor and performer on several occasions, most recently in 2012, and has been artistic director of the Leicester International Music Festival since 2004.

The previous artistic directors at Dartington are Gavin Henderson, who left in 2010, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and summer school founder Sir William Glock, who established it at the Devon estate in 1953.
