Jonas Kaufmann’s last solo disc on Decca before his recent move to Sony Classical ‒ an album of Wagner arias with Donald Runnicles and the orchestra of Deutsche Oper Berlin released in February this year ‒ is among several pre-announced winners of this year’s Gramophone magazine awards.

The magazine has announced winners in 11 categories before an awards ceremony in three weeks’ time (17 September), when it will reveal its recording of the year, artist of the year, young artist of the year, label of the year, and a lifetime achievement award, at LSO St Luke’s in London.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra has won in the orchestral category for the second year running, and the contemporary music category was won by Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra’s recording of works by Duttilleux, with soloists Barbara Hannigan and Anssi Karttunen.

Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir have won in the baroque vocal category for its album of Bach motets recorded live at St John’s Smith Square in 2011.
