- 9 April 2013

The Hallé’s live disc of Elgar’s oratorio The Apostles, recorded live and in rehearsal at The Bridgewater Hall on 5 May 2012, was named recording of the year at today’s BBC Music Magazine awards.

The BBC Music Magazine awards for new classical recordings were held today at a ceremony at Kings Place, London. The Hallé’s live disc of Elgar’s oratorio The Apostles was named Recording of the Year, having also won the choral award.

The Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle also won two awards: the DVD award for their performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion and the orchestral award for their recording of Bruckner’s ninth symphony on EMI.

Malaysian pianist Mei Yi Foo won the newcomer award for Musical Toys, her recital disc of works by Gubaidulina, Unusk Chin and Ligeti on Odradek, and the premiere award was given to the Ondine-released recording of Kaija Saariaho’s clarinet concerto D’Om le Vrai Sens by soloist Kari Kriikku and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo.

The instrumental award was given to pianist Janina Fialkowska for her second ‘Chopin Recital’ disc, released last year on Atma Classique.

Angelika Kirchschlager won the vocal award for her Liszt recital with Julius Drake on Hyperion, and Trio Zimmermann won the chamber award for its Beethoven op 9 Trios on BIS.

The technical excellence award went to Pentatone for the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus’ recording of Wagner’s Parsifal under Marek Janowski, which the judges called ‘unquestionably the finest modern version on disc’.

The ceremony was presented by BBC Music Magazine editor Oliver Condy and BBC presenter James Naughtie.

Presenting the Recording of the Year award, the BBC’s newly appointed director general, Tony Hall, reaffirmed his commitment to music and its importance to the BBC. Other presenters included pianist Imogen Cooper and Radio 3 presenters Sara Mohr-Pietsch, Tom Service and Andrew McGregor. BBC Music Magazine is wholly owned by Immediate Media Co.
