Sounding Out: Stage Notes, Royal Opera House, 16 March

The Royal Opera House and Sound and Music are running Sounding Out: Stage Notes on 16 March, an afternoon of panel discussions and Q&As with leading figures from the world of contemporary opera which will bring together opera practitioners to offer ‘a unique professional development opportunity’ for emerging composers, librettists, artists and producers.

Sound and Music’s chief executive, Susanna Eastburn, will chair a panel discussion with participants Judith Weir (composer and librettist), Oliver Mears (artistic director of Northern Ireland Opera and founder/artistic director of Second Movement), Laura Bowler (composer, mezzo-soprano, and founder/artistic director of Size Zero Opera), Jonathan Reekie (chief executive of Aldeburgh Music) and Martin Crimp (playwright and librettist).

There will be talks and presentations by composer Huw Watkins (composer and pianist) and David Harsent (poet and librettist) who have collaborated most recently on In the Locked Room, John Fulljames (associate director of opera at the Royal Opera House), and Jennifer Walshe (composer and vocalist).

There will also be networking opportunities for artists and producers to start developing any new ideas inspired by the event.

Sounding Out: Stage Notes takes place at the Clore Studio Upstairs, Royal Opera House, London, Saturday 16 March, 1.30pm-5.30pm.
